3 Days Nyungwe Chimpanzee Trekking in Rwanda
Nyungwe Chimpanzee Trekking is only done in Nyungwe national park in Rwanda that also hosts up to other 13 primates. Nyungwe forest is known for its adventurous canopy walk and most tourists would wish to visit this park while on their Rwanda safari. Nyungwe rainforest offers spectacular scenery mostly observed while on a canopy walk.
Primates that will be spotted during this safari to Nyungwe forest national park include chimpanzees – our closest cousins, olive baboons, black and white and white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys among others. Have an hour in the presence of chimpanzees while having the best of your safari moments.
Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe national park in southwestern Rwanda – 5 to 6 hours
Your tour representative or driver-guide will pick you from the point of agreement, may be at the hotel or airport and they will offer a short brief about the tour and Rwanda at large. The guide will thereafter take you around the city of Kigali in case time allows and after head southwards to Nyungwe national park.
Nyungwe forest is known to be home of 13 primates that live in this natural habitat, as well as an East African canopy walk, a bridge that is suspended at a height of 9m and 200m long in the air. This offers scenery that is breathtaking.
The journey to this park is rewarding with rolling hills and valleys. The drive to Nyungwe national park takes about 5-6 hours and on arrival, you will check in the accommodation booked, have dinner and take a nap.
Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking and Canopy walk
Wake up and enjoy a tasty breakfast that is followed by a drive to the park offices where the briefing before chimpanzee tracking takes place. Upon reaching this point, you will attend the briefing with other trekkers and a lot of things will be covered such as the history of Nyungwe forest national park, its inhabitants, rules and regulations guiding you while on the trek such as not making noise, do not dump in the forest, flashlight cameras are not allowed, feeding animals is prohibited among others.
After, head to the forest and start a search with the help of a park ranger guide well-armed and equipped with information. Upon locating the chimps, you will have an hour in their presence as you take memorable photos, recording videos among others. After, head out of the forest and proceed to your accommodation, be served with lunch and head for an afternoon canopy walk at exactly 14:00hours. The bridge is suspended at a height of 9 meters and 200m long hence offering great sights and sounds of this forest.
Take in aerial views of the forest with its primates jumping from one side of the bridge to another. After the experience, you will return to the lodge for dinner and prepare for next day’s departure.
Day 3: Drive back to Kigali city – 5 to 6 hours
Take a drive back to Kigali after tasty breakfast and depending on the time of exit flight, you may have a chance to visit some city attractions like the presidential Palace museum, local markets among others. Lunch en-route will be served since the journey takes about 5 to 6 hours and a drop-off at a point of agreement which might be either a hotel or airport and this will mark the end of your Nyungwe Chimpanzee Trekking safari.
